铝镁尖晶石属于一种铝镁氧化物，其主要成分为氧化铝和氧化镁。铝镁尖晶石有天然形成和人工合成两种，其化学式为MgAL2O4或者Mgo•AL2O3。尖晶石理论含量为：MgO=28.3%M,AL2O3=71.7%。天然镁砂尖晶石极少发现，工业上应用的铝镁尖晶石全部都是人工合成的。合成铝镁尖晶石的两个主要方法是烧结法和电熔法。多数尖晶石材料是由高纯合成氧化铝和化学级氧化镁制成，即在竖窑烧结和在电弧炉内电熔。
【产品分类】
铝镁尖晶石采用烧结法和电熔法两种生产工艺。原料主要是菱镁矿和工业氧化铝粉或铝矾土。按氧化镁和氧化铝的指标不同，分富镁尖晶石和富铝尖晶石并应用不同领域。
一、按生产工艺或方法分：烧结铝镁尖晶石（烧结尖晶石）和电熔铝镁尖晶石（电熔尖晶石）。
二、按生产原料可以划分：铝矾土基铝镁尖晶石与氧化铝基铝镁尖晶石（烧结或电熔）。

【产品用途】
烧结铝镁尖晶石用于水泥回转窑，不但避免了铬公害，而且具有良好的抗剥落性。烧结铝镁尖晶石用于制作钢包浇注料，大大提高钢板衬的抗侵蚀能力，使烧结铝镁尖晶石广泛应用于炼钢用耐火材料。优质预合成尖晶石的制取为不定形及定形高纯耐火材料的生产提供了新的原料。
电熔铝镁尖晶石是制造滑板、水口砖、平炉炉砖的理想材料。铝镁尖晶石制品的高温力学性能良好，是大型水泥窑中性水泥窑过滤带、耐火浇注料、高中窑具的基本原料。电熔铝镁尖晶石用于钢铁冶炼、玻璃工业窑炉。
